Laurens works across Shell Foundation’s Access to Energy portfolio, with a focus on (pay-as-you-go) off-grid solar businesses.
Laurens has worked in off-grid (pico) solar for the last seven years. Most recently, he laid the foundation of the (pay-as-you-go) solar energy business of Digicel, a telecommunications multinational in Papua New Guinea. Prior to that, he was the first hire in East Africa of Greenlight Planet. He was responsible for overall development of the business in the region and with the growing team they ten folded revenue and sales in three years, ultimately selling over a million products. Prior to this, he managed the Ethiopia country programme for the NGO Rural Energy Foundation and helped in the early stages of its social enterprise spin-off SolarNow. Laurens started his professional career at one of the Netherlands' most reputable consultancy firms as a business strategy consultant. He was educated in The Netherlands and Spain, graduating with a Master’s degree in Business Studies and a specialisation in Business Development in 2005.
