d.light Achievements

d.light products are available in 62 countries via 12,000 retailers and 4 regional hubs

d.light has grown rapidly since 2009, with total sales of over 12 million solar light and power products that have improved the lives of 65 million* people in the developing world.

Their early success proves the market demand even in the world’s poorest areas, where people have shown a willingness to invest in products that provide immediate improvements to health, livelihoods and earning potential.

The business employs more than 500 people worldwide and has become the world’s largest provider of affordable solar power to the rural poor. d.light products are sold in 62 countries through 12,000 retail outlets, 10 field offices and four regional hubs.

Our partnership has also pioneered new ways to incentivise national distributors and local retailers to carry d.light products – particularly in Africa where distributors typically lack the finance and risk appetite to place bulk orders.

In 2011, Shell Foundation and d.light joined forces with the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) to address this bottleneck by creating an innovative $2 million facility to allow d.light to extend credit and training in sales and marketing to high-potential distributors in Africa. This novel finance mechanism has allowed d.light to significantly scale its distribution network – creating a path for other manufacturers serving off-grid consumers to follow.

Shell Foundation has also helped d.light to develop a range of innovative partnerships with corporates, microfinance institutions and social enterprises to activate demand in rural areas and provide financing options for the poorest customers.

Since 2011, d.light has more than doubled its sales volumes every year: a growth trajectory that has enabled them to attract over $40 million capital from a number of social and commercial investors including Kawisafi Ventures, Omidyar Network, NewQuest Capital, Acumen Fund and Gray Ghost Ventures.

In 2013 d.light was awarded the Zayed Future Energy Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious energy awards, in recognition of their work.  Co-founders Ned Tozun and Sam Goldman received the Schwab Foundation Entrepeneur of the Year award in 2016 and d.light's "A1 light" costing only $5, received the Innovation by Design Award.
