In India, auto rickshaws play a crucial role as part of India’s integrated public transport system – making more than 229 million passenger trips per day.
However it remains to be an unorganised sector where improvements are needed in the service and security of passengers, as well as working conditions for drivers.
In November 2013, Shell Foundation and long term partner EMBARQ
launched a business competition ‘Rickshaw Rising’ to find entrepreneurs with innovative solutions to India’s auto-rickshaw sector. The competition received 46 applications from 13 Indian states, and the three most promising solutions received funding and business support to help them to build large-scale, sustainable, auto-rickshaw businesses.
