Freight transportation aligns on reporting standards

SF partner Smart Freight Centre (SFC) and the Global Logistic Emissions Council (GLEC) today released an updated method – the GLEC Framework – to calculate the carbon footprint of freight transport.

The updated GLEC Framework is designed to be easy for companies to implement, with clear calculation steps, guidance on reporting and target setting.  This means that freight organisations can more easily calculate and report emissions from planes, trains, ships, trucks and logistics sites consistently across supply chains, the results of which are used to identify promising areas for innovation and improvement.

Freight and logistics are reckoned to generate around 8-10% of global CO2 emissions and the Framework will help the freight industry align on reporting standards and be much more transparent.

Global non-profit SFC leads the GLEC – a group of companies, industry associations and programmes which is backed by leading experts and other stakeholders in the freight industry.  More than 30 leading multinationals have formal adopted the GLEC Framework since its first release in 2016 – a number which is expected to rise significantly.
