d.light and M-KOPA named in Global LEAP Awards

Winners and finalists of the 2016-17 Global LEAP Awards for Outstanding Off-Grid TVs and Fans have been announced, and feature two Shell Foundation enterprise partners.

leap-awards-dlight.jpgd.light Design was named the winner in the Medium TV category for its LED TV SV19, and M-KOPA was a finalist in the Small TV category for its Solar TV STY 1015.

This is the third round of the Global LEAP Awards, which tests nominees’ products for their energy performance, quality and reliability, and are then evaluated by a panel of off-grid market experts.

SF has partnered with d.light and M-KOPA  since 2008 and 2011 respectively, helping both to design and manufacture innovative products and establish distribution and finance models to bring solar appliances to low-income populations in numerous markets.

Leap-awards-mkopa.jpg“High quality, energy-efficient off-grid appliances transform the lives of people living without access to the grid, by making the most of the limited energy supply provided by off-grid solar energy systems,” said Andrew M Herscowitz, Coordinator for Power Africa, the USAID initiative which supports the awards.

This round of the awards also included the first-ever competition for off-grid refrigerators and Global LEAP anticipates announcing results from this in January 2018.

In total, the 2016–17 awards attracted 128 nominations from 41 companies in 17 different countries across its three product categories.
